Here are some tips to help make your building project go smoother.

1) Find a lot or property that you will be happy with. Whether it's a lot in a subdivision or acreage surrounded by state land, make sure it's what you really want.

2) Will your property have access to sewers, or will you need a septic field?

3) Likewise, what about other utilities? Does your property have access to natural gas? If not, and you still want the convenience of gas, you will have to use propane. How about cable service? This is very important for entertainment options and fast internet.

4) It's a good idea to find out what restrictions may be in place in your project area. Subdivision bylaws, township zoning rules and requirements, and possible DNR/DEQ use restrictions are all potentially very important.

5) Find a good architect. A local one is usually a good choice, because they have a thorough knowledge of all of the above.
